About Us


Our leadership team at Ben Porat Yosef is guided by the mission and hashkafa of the school to provide an outstanding education within a warm and nurturing environment. It is our goal to instill in our children a love of Torah, mitzvot and Eretz Yisrael and to strengthen their minds and souls so that they may grow to become active members and contributors to klal Yisrael as well as the broader society.

Rabbi Tomer Ronen, Rosh HaYeshiva heads our leadership team and brings over fifteen years of experience in the field of education, including six years at SAR Academy in Riverdale, NY.  He also served as the rabbi and chazzan of the Sephardic Congregation Beit Aharon of Riverdale.  Originally an elementary school teacher in Rechovot, Israel, Rabbi Ronen brings a dynamic energy and a passion for authentic Hebrew language learning.  Rabbi Ronen’s hands-on leadership style means that at any moment he can be found actively engaging our students in any number of fantastic programs, from weekly parashat hashavua stories to his everyday lunchtime visits.  His warmth and enthusiasm set the tone for the entire Ben Porat Yosef  “experience".  Rav Ronen can be contacted at

Becky Hirschfield, General Studies Principal joined the BPY team this year.  Before coming to BPY she was the Associate Principal of General Studies in the Middle School at SAR Academy since 2010.  Ms. Hirschfield is a professional with remarkable integrity, intelligence and authenticity.  The founding director of Educational Support Services at SAR, Becky has a Master's Degree in Special Education from Columbia Teacher's College and an exquisite understanding of students' learning styles.  She has been a classroom teacher at Manhattan Day School and at SAR where she led SAR in both the accreditation process for the New York Association of Independent Schools and the one-to-one iPad program.  Her calm demeanor and genuine respect for children are evidence of her appreciation for the "BPY way."  We are thrileld to have Becky at Ben Porat Yosef!  Becky can be contacted at

Jessica Kohn, Early Childhood Director & Associate Principal, is a professional with over eighteen years of experience in early childhood programs at Jewish day schools. She infuses her warmth, energy, limitless creativity and commitment to the children of Ben Porat Yosef.  She was a founding educator of the school and was instrumental in implementing her vision of a child centered, individualized and differentiated education. Morah Jessica is an active member of every teaching team and develops a personal relationship with every student and family in our early childhood program. As a state certified Reading Specialist, Morah Jessica has created an environment rich with early literacy experiences.  The children eagerly await her weekly storytime visits.  Morah Jessica can be contacted at

Ruth Roth, Director of Admissions and PR, brings to her position an extensive background in marketing and sales. Her experience includes many marketing positions and, most recently, the position of Vice President of Marketing at a national managed healthcare company. Ruth was also President of the Frisch Parents Association for four years during which time she developed and implemented many innovative programs for students that continue to be successful and well received. In addition, in that capacity she was involved in structuring and implementing many Open House programs. Ruth is responsible for developing and implementing activities and programs designed to attract families to Ben Porat Yosef. Mrs. Roth can be contacted at

Elana Cohn, Director of Special Services and Grades 1 & 2, who holds a Masters degree in Special Education and is trained in multi-sensory reading and reading assessments, has over ten years of experience in the field of special education.  She has taught in kindergarten through eighth grade, in a variety of subjects, and in varied special education settings, including self-contained, inclusion model, and resource classes.  At BPY, she has been leading the Learning Center and support services staff since 2007.  Her main focus has been to ensure that each individual student’s needs are met, partnering with parents, the Bergen County Special Services Team, and outside professionals.   She meets with all students who apply to the elementary grades as part of the admissions process and in her role as director of grades 1 & 2, is engaged in all aspects of those grades.  Morah Elana enjoys working with the wonderful BPY teachers as a mentor through the Jewish New Teacher Project, and as a supervisor, to help teachers provide the best experience for each of their students.  Morah Elana can be contacted at
